The good news is, there is financial help available. For instance, if you qualify for Medicaid, you may be eligible to receive assistance to help pay some of the costs associated with memory care. We’ll explain how it all works and what you need to do to see if you qualify for this type of financial assistance.
Medicaid coverage varies by state. Arizona’s Medicaid plan, also known as the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS), does not cover the cost of room and board for memory care residents. However, you or your loved one may qualify for financial assistance to help cover the cost of memory care services through the Arizona Long-Term Care System (ALTCS) program.
ALTCS is a state-administered program that uses Medicaid funding to help cover the costs of long-term care for those unable to care for themselves, such as seniors and individuals living with disabilities. Even though ALTCS is a state-run program, you don’t have to stay at a memory care center operated by the state in order to qualify for assistance. Since ALTCS contracts with many privately-owned assisted living and memory care communities, you simply need to find one that accepts ALTCS as a form of payment.
So how exactly do you qualify for this program? Read on to learn more about how eligibility is determined.
If at all possible, plan ahead. The ALTCS program requires you to complete an application, which typically takes two to three months to process. Eligibility for the program is based on two components: financial need and a functional/medical assessment. You will basically be evaluated to determine whether you need financial assistance and whether your health needs require long-term care. For instance, there is a limit on your countable resources and monthly income.
The assessment is done based on points, with a successful application receiving a total of 60 points or more.
